Capital Area Sportsmen’s League receives grant from the Hal and Jean Glassen Memorial Foundation

The Hal and Jean Glassen Foundation has committed to providing a grant of $312,000 to construct a new shotgun building at the Capital Area Sportsmen’s League. The remainder of the cost of the building is $127,000, for which CASL is looking for cash donations. If the amount is not achieved by donations, CASL will explore other avenues of raising monies, such as shoots, auctions, raising dues, or limited special assessment(s) to cover the remainder of the cost. The building will be 40’x 80’ with a covered porch, open space, learning room, breakroom, bathroom, safe room and office. A new building is needed due to shotgun sports outgrowing the existing building and the increasing demand for shotgun sports in the Greater Lansing area. The new building will also provide space for the expanding youth shotgun sports at Capital Area Sportsmen’s League. The new building will be named after The Hal & Jean Glassen Memorial Foundation.

Hal Glassen, a well-known Lansing attorney and World War II veteran, had a strong commitment to conservation and enthusiasm for shooting sports. Mr. Glassen was a longtime member of Capital Area Sportsmen’s League and President of the National Rifle Association from 1967-1969. He spearheaded the NRA’s firearm education programs and, as a member of Michigan United Conservation Clubs, he initiated the hunter safety and education programs that we know today.

Jean Glassen was the first woman to graduate from the University of Wisconsin’s Agricultural School, where she earned a degree in bacteriology. She retired as a biologist with the Michigan Department of Public Health.

The Hal & Jean Glassen Memorial Foundation, established in 1992, provides financial assistance to organizations supportive of these charitable and educational objectives:

  • To encourage firearms shooting skill competition.

  • To promote the lawful use and possession of firearms.

  • To help fund game bird and animal research studies by schools of natural resources.

  • To support research of animal diseases affecting dogs and cats.

  • To provide for the welfare of animals through organizations that are not anti-hunting.

Married for nearly 60 years, Hal and Jean spent their lives together outdoors pursuing their passions of hunting and shooting. They established the Glassen Foundation before their deaths to continue the ambitions and goals to which they dedicated their lives.
